Mentor was a young man enslaved. He was one of the three freedom fighters held responsible for the great city fire in Paramaribo. Mentor had fled from his original owner and hid in the Picorni forest together with other runaways. To survive, they committed petty robberies to get food and other necessities of life.

On 3 September 1832, they set fire to Monsanto’s shop as a diversion to get necessities elsewhere. The next day it became clear exactly how big the fire was.
Mantor, together with Codjo and Present, were identified as the arsonists. On 26 January 1833 they were sentenced to death.

Mentor was about 20 years old at the time of the court ruling. And was born in the coastal region of Guinea. He was the largest of the 3 suspects. He had visible scars on their buttocks, presumably from previous sentences

PLAIN starts this campaign to introduce our followers to Surinamese heroes/freedom fighters. We do not want these people to be forgotten.
